Before he was the Sentinel of the Spaceways, he was Norrin Radd, a gifted astronomer living a quiet, contented life on the utopian planet of Zenn-La. His world was free of strife, and his people had long since abandoned ambition and emotion, content to live in their perfect, sterile society. But Norrin was a soul set apart. He yearned for adventure and was filled with a curiosity that no one else on Zenn-La shared. When the world-devourer known as Galactus came to consume his planet, Norrin was the only one brave enough to confront the cosmic entity.
The true tale of his sacrifice, however, was not revealed until years later in Silver Surfer (Vol. 3) #1 (1987), where readers were shown the raw emotional stakes behind his fateful decision. To save his planet and his beloved Shalla-Bal from certain doom, Norrin offered himself as a herald. He pleaded with Galactus to spare Zenn-La, offering to find him new, uninhabited worlds to feed on so that no other civilization would have to face his destruction. Galactus accepted the bargain, but not before Norrin was granted a glimpse of the vast power his new master wielded. Norrin's desperate offer and the subsequent transformation into the Silver Surfer occurred in a single, world-altering moment in Fantastic Four #48 (1966).
Bestowed with a fraction of the Power Cosmic, Norrin's form was encased in a silver shell, and his memories and emotions were suppressed. He became a detached servant, a gilded scout scouring the stars to feed the ever-hungry Devourer of Worlds. The Surfer led Galactus to countless planets, until his path brought him to Earth. There, a chance encounter with the blind sculptress Alicia Masters awoke his long-dormant conscience. Her simple act of kindness reminded him of the love and humanity he had sacrificed. In Fantastic Four #49–50 (1966), he made his final choice: he would help the Fantastic Four and defy his master to save the Earth from being consumed, setting him on a new, lonely path as a free but exiled man.
