This original concept established the Flora Colossi as a verbose, villainous species bent on galactic domination. For decades, that was all they were—a footnote in monster comics history. But a heroic echo of that idea was waiting to take root, and the Groot who would change the galaxy was a stark contrast to his monstrous predecessors.

Before he was the heart of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the being known as Groot was believed to be the last of his kind, a noble scion of the Flora Colossi. Despite possessing a brilliant and strategic mind, his ancient species' hardened larynx limited his speech to three simple words: "I am Groot." This often-caused others to underestimate him, mistaking his quiet dignity for a lack of intelligence. A living, walking tree with the power to regenerate from the smallest splinter, Groot's lonely existence was shattered when he was captured and imprisoned by the Kree, setting him on a path he never could have imagined.

It was in a Kree prison that Groot's path was irrevocably altered. He was forcibly recruited into a high-stakes, off-the-books mission led by Peter Quill, the man who would become Star-Lord. This ragtag team, including Rocket Raccoon, Mantis, Bug, and Deathcry, were tasked with infiltrating the techno-organic Phalanx and destroying their Babel Spire, a tower that threatened to consume the entire galaxy as detailed in Annihilation: Conquest - Starlord #1 (2007). It was here he formed an unlikely but profound friendship with Rocket, one of the few beings capable of understanding the nuanced meaning behind his three simple words.

Groot’s true origin as a hero was forged in fire and sacrifice. To destroy the Babel Spire from within, Mantis used her abilities to accelerate Groot's growth to a colossal, uncontrollable scale, an act that would burn out his life force. Fully aware of the cost, Groot willingly gave his life, becoming a living, burning shield to protect his new friends as they escaped the ensuing inferno in the climax of Annihilation: Conquest #5 (2008).
