Origin Spark: A Warrior of Two Worlds

Before she was a hero,  Danielle "Dani" Moonstar  was a young woman from the Cheyenne Nation whose life was upended when her mutant powers first appeared. This wasn't a gift, but a terrifying curse: an uncontrollable ability to project the deepest fears of those around her as solid, terrifying illusions. As shown in her first appearance in  Marvel Graphic Novel #4  (1982), this power isolated her and was linked to a horrifying vision of a demonic bear mauling her parents, who then vanished without a trace.

The final push into a larger world came with brutal force when agents of the villainous Donald Pierce  and the  Hellfire Club  attacked her home and murdered her grandfather, Black Eagle. Robbed of her family, a grieving Dani was found by  Professor Charles Xavier , who offered her a place at his school. She joined his new class of students, the  New Mutants , not to become a hero, but to survive and gain control over the frightening power that had cost her everything, as seen in the team's debut in  The New Mutants (Vol. 1) #1  (1983).

Under the guidance of  Professor X , Dani began to master her psionic abilities. Believing it was hunting her, she faced it alone and was nearly killed. The creature then lay siege to the hospital where she was recovering, forcing the New Mutants into a desperate battle. They discovered the bear was a mystical entity holding the corrupted souls of Dani's parents, and by defeating it, Dani not only saved herself but freed her family's spirits, turning a source of trauma into a symbol of her strength.

Her journey took an even more dramatic turn during the Asgardian Wars storyline, detailed in  New Mutants Special Edition #1  (1985). Kidnapped by the trickster god  Loki  and stranded in the mystical realm of  Asgard , Dani saved a beautiful, winged horse named Brightwind. This noble act bound them together, and Brightwind chose her as his rider, anointing her as one of  Odin's Valkyries. This transformation granted her a host of new powers, including superhuman strength and the ability to sense the coming of death.
